Effective July 1, 2023, temporary signs are not permitted in the designated public right of way, and are not permitted in the street, street median, or sidewalk, in residential, commercial, or industrial zones, other than the Downtown Specific Plan and as specified in LDC 4.06.060 and 4.06.140.

Note - Updates are coming soon to Livermore's Temporary Sign Ordinance (LDC 4.06.140) to implement the sign prohibition approved by the City Council in November 2022.

Definitions

"Temporary Sign" is a sign intended to be displayed for a limited period of time only. Examples of temporary signs include garage sale signs, real estate signs, political signs, etc.

“Public Property” is any property publicly owned outside of the public right-of-way, including parks, City Hall, the Civic Center area, libraries, police and fire departments, and
schools.

“Designated Public Right-of Way” is the area within ten feet of the curb face (see drawing below) and any backing lot landscaped easement areas:

Prohibited Sign Locations

For the safety of drivers and pedestrians, all temporary signs are prohibited in these areas and will be immediately removed and stored for 15 days prior to disposal:

  • Street Medians
  • Sidewalks or Streets
  • Traffic Signals
  • Street Light Poles
  • Power Poles
  • Schools
  • Parks
  • Public Property
  • Anywhere within 10’ from curb

Non-Commercial Signs on Private Property
(Greater than ten feet from the curb)

Temporary signs placed on private properties in residential zoning districts must meet the following requirements:

  • Maximum size of four square feet per sign
  • Signs must be stake signs
  • No limit to number of signs

Temporary signs in commercial zoning districts still require a temporary sign permit from the Planning Division. The Planning Division can be reached at (925) 960-4450.

Enforcement and Filing a Complaint

Signs found to be in violation of the Livermore Development Code will be removed, held for 15 days, and then discarded. City staff will attempt to contact the owner based on content displayed on the sign.
