Summer Learning with Livermore Public Library

Post Date:05/01/2024 10:41 AM

The Livermore Public Library invites the community to participate in the Summer Learning Program.  Participants of all ages can track their reading and activities to earn prizes and raffle tickets.  Starting May 1, anyone may register at Livermore.beanstack.org or on the free Beanstack app.  Time spent reading after June 1 can be logged online or on paper gameboards available at any Livermore Public Library location.  All reading and listening to books counts.  The program runs through August 14.

“Read, Renew, Repeat” is the theme of the 2024 Summer Learning Program.  The Livermore Public Library is committed to supporting youth summer learning.  According to a study by the Rand Corporation, students lose knowledge and skills over summer break, performing, on average, one month behind where they left off in the spring.  Summer learning programs can help children improve academic outcomes and instill a love of learning.

All participants make progress in the Summer Learning Program by reading and completing a list of special activities that help the community.  Prizes earned vary by age group.  Children in grades K-6 can earn a free book for registering and their choice of a Papa Murphys Mini Murph Pizza, Chick-fil-A dessert, a swim pass to an LARPD pool, or frozen yogurt from Menchie’s.  Those that complete the game will also receive a medal and an invitation to meet the Mayor and City Council at a special City Council meeting in the fall.

Future readers, including babies, can play their own game by counting the number of books read to them.  They can earn a free book for registering, a seed planting kit, and choice of Play Doh, sidewalk chalk, or bubbles.  Research has shown that reading aloud to a child for as little as 15 minutes every day has a huge impact on early brain development.  According to the American Library Association, reading together develops vocabulary and comprehension, nurtures a love of reading, and motivates children to learn to read.

Teens and adults can also join in the summer learning fun.  Teen prizes for grades 6-12 include a free book from the Friends of the Livermore Library bookstore, vinyl stickers, keychains, and a tote bag.  Adults get a free book from the Friends of the Livermore Library bookstore just for registering as well as raffle tickets for further progress.

For all ages, additional reading and activities can earn raffle tickets for prizes like a Nintendo Switch, LEGO sets, Le Creuset Cast Iron Cook’s Oven, Hydroflask water bottles, Boba making kits, and more!

A full calendar of events has been planned for this summer, including a 20th Birthday Party for the Civic Center Library on June 8.  For further information call 925-373-5500.  The Summer Learning Program is supported by the Friends of the Livermore Public Library.  Additional partners include Chick-fil-A, Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt, Livermore Area Recreation and Park District, Papa Murphys Pizza, Quest Science Center, Open Heart Kitchen, Financial Beginnings, East Bay Regional Park District, Bubbs’ Bagels, and Loard’s Ice Cream
