The Property & Evidence Unit is part of the Support Services Division and consists of two Property & Evidence Technicians and one supervisor. The Property & Evidence Unit is responsible for booking all found, safekeeping, and evidence items brought into the police department. The property is stored until it can be returned to the legal owner, the case has been adjudicated in court, or the statute of limitations has expired. Items stored include bicycles, firearms, money, drugs, backpacks, checks, credit cards, audio and video equipment, furniture, computers, biological material, hazardous materials, and a variety of other items.

Every reasonable effort will be made to return property to its rightful owner. Property is released to the rightful owner or their designee by appointment only with photo identification (driver’s license, ID card or passport) from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Appointments may be scheduled by calling 925-371-4940.

All items seized as a result of a search warrant require a court order prior to release.  Call 925-371-4940 to verify the status of property.

Firearm Returns

Individuals seeking the return of the firearms must apply for gun release eligibility from the California Department of Justice (DOJ).  Contact DOJ at 916-263-4887 or go to the California Department of Justice website for forms and information. The process may take approximately 1-2 months and is fully dependent on the individual’s receipt of DOJ’s Gun Release letter. Once approval is granted by DOJ for the return of firearm(s), schedule an appointment and bring the certified DOJ letter, proof of ownership and a valid photo identification to the Livermore Police Department at the time of pick up.

Ammunition

The Livermore Police Department does not accept ammunition for disposal.  Residents can drop-off ammunition at the Livermore Household Hazardous Waste facility at 5584 La Ribera Street.  Call 1-800-606-6606 for more information.
